Abstract

This experiments was conducted to find the most effective method for elongation of vase-life of cut roses (Rosa hybrida L. cv. Marina). The studies covered the influence of preservative water and sucrose and aluminum sulfate in holding solution on vase-life of cut roses.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1. The use of boiled water resulted in an early flowering but reduced vase-life. This contrasted to the use of fresh tap water everyday in that the latter maintained a steady flower opening with a longer vase-life.
2. Addition of 5% sucrose and 300ppm aluminum sulfate to the holding solution extended vase-life for 2 days compared with the control (fresh tap water everyday) having the vase-life of 5 days. The petals turned brighter when sucrose was added to holding solution.
To extend vase-life of cut roses, it is recommended that (1) fresh tap water be used everydays. (2) The vase-life of cut roses can be extended further when fresh tap water is supplemented with 5% sucrose and 300ppm aluminum sulfate.
